October 18: First frost and freeze of the fall- a bit later than usual. Farm low temperature= 28.8 F

October 28: Heavy rain until 1500. Then wet, heavy snow into the night. Next morning, 10/29, some 2" on the ground. Shrubs and some trees weighted down. Huge forsythia only a short mound. One stem of the Amur maple across the road at corner of old barn foundation weighted down to the ground- looks bad for it.

November 3: First blossom on one of the "holiday" cacti. All 4 of them have buds, some quite large.

By the end of November all 3 kinds of "holiday" cacti had bloomed-white with pink center, rose red & an orange

January 12, 2009- Happy New Year! Started geranium cuttings under a fluorescent light that were taken from the plants in the house for the winter. Only one of them has a flower at this time. I pruned the top growth.

Jan. 20: Repotted some house plants. Took a root cutting of a wiry type cactus and started it in a small clay pot.

Old lilacs that were transplanted across from the house years ago from along the lane at the T intersection on top of the ridge bloomed heavily. Columbines at end of house began to bloom, with the A. canadense very much ahead of the hybrids.

Set out "boughten" red salvia plants above the near end of the rock garden and put four each in two good sized potts. Put Celosia plumosias in the five large planter boxes that go in front of the breezeway. Also four in a pot. Transplanted "Feverfew" at base of house foundation below dining room windows.
