Introduction to "The Farm"
"The Farm," as it is called by family
members, is located in the "West Glenville" section of the Town of
Glenville, Schenectady County, New York, USA. This is in the very
northwestern part of the Town and is only two miles from the borders
with Montgomery and Saratoga Counties. The area is found on the
"Patersonville" quadrangle of the maps of the USA produced by the
Geological Survey. Below are reproductions of those parts of the "Topo"
that show Lovers Lane. The cluster of houses at the "T" intersection is
the center of the hamlet of West Glenville. The area was first settled
in 1795. Lovers lane is the two dashed lines that go from the center of
the map toward the upper left. On the second map, the house is the
black, small rectangle at the end of the lane. The steep, two step
ridge past the house is clearly denoted by the close together brown
lines.
Neither map shows any houses on the lane but mine, which is the way it
was in 1964, when I purchased the property. Now, however, there are ten
houses in front of my property. Fortunately, the closest two are 1500
feet away and no new ones can be built any closer. Actually, even the
sight of these is blocked by trees.

The six acre pond
mentioned on the next page is located in the white area on the map
above (#2) that is shown as marsh to the right of the lane and down
from the house. There is a 715 foot long, 15 foot high dam that created
the pond from the inflow of the "Crabbskill" stream that flows from the
bottom left corner of the map and under the lane. It is a major
tributary of the "Alplaus Creek." Unfortunately, the pond is mostly too
shallow to prevent the growth of weeds. Only about one-quarter of the
pond directly in front of the dam is twelve feet deep. The pond was
created by the previous owners of the property.
