June 14, 2010: First day of three that a huge, splendid swan was on the pond. First time in 44 years that one has been seen here.
6-17-10: Large deer on lane twice on approach to the house. "Spitzie" and it stared at one another for a while. Then "S" ran at the deer and the chase was on.
Woodchuck continues to live under the extension to the breezeway. Comes out AM and PM to eat grass.
July summary: There are two families of Canada geese this year. Didn't spot them until  goslings were quite well grown. A Great Blue Heron is around the pond. Spotted two does and each with a pair of twins crossing the lane on my way out; each on a different occasion. Unfortunately and sadly, birds are virtually non-existent. A few are raiding the developing blueberies. "Spitzie" and the same deer as above came almost "head to head" at bottom of the side yard. "S" on the lawn and the deer below the lower border and low stone wall. Finally, the deer leaped the flower border and charge "S." "S" high tailed it for the hpuse!  At the end of the month the woodchuck at back of breezeway hadn't been seen for a while. On July 30th a medium sized red fox was spotted at 0700 across the road by the rear flower bed.

August summary: Mid-month in the early morning a doe, with year old twins, came out of the pine grove and browsed on the grass cross from the house. As they were departing down the lane, another doe, with twins from this year, followed the same path.

September summary: Deer and turkeys seen several times. Great blue heron(s) feeding on edge of pond. First migrating C. geese came in at end of month.

October summary: Small flock(s) of geese regularly overnight on the pond early in the month. Night of 13th some animal (skunk, raccoon?) visited the area in front of the breezeway and inside. "Spitzie" smelled carefully and tentatively all around the morning of the 14th. Early in the morning toward the end of the month five deer were grazing the grass across the lane from the house. "Spitzie" and the deer stared at each other before "S" charged at them. The deer fled back into the pine grove, and "S" came back to the house, thankfully.

November 2: A huge gathering of C. geese on the pond for an overnight stay. They departed very early on the 3rd, not to return.

December 4: Hung one coffee can, oil type sunflower seed feeder on the front yard cable. Within a couple hours it was being visited! Likely a chickadee(s).
12-5-10: At 0730 a very healthy looking gray fox was just across the lane from the house. It finally meandered across the field and into the pine grove. Never seen a gray fox here before in 45 years! My dog, "Spitzie," must have seen it out the front LR window, because he became hyper in asking to go out.
12-8-10: Hung up seven more coffee can sflwr seed feeders. More birds visiting, as expected, including finches and woodpecker. Now putting mixed seed out.
12-15-10: The various feeders being visited by a variety of birds, incl.: jays, juncos, sparrows, nuthatches, chicadees, finches, cardinals, woodpeckers, doves.

January 14, 2011:  "Spitzie" spotted deer across the lane before dawn. Stared at them for a while and then  made brief chase. Too dark for CGS to see the deer. Tracks clear in daylight.

March 2011: Around the tenth of the month spotted a male eastern bluebird on  low branch of the maple behind the garage. Seen from the kitchen window.
3-13-11: Female redwing blackbird visited the front yard bird feeders. Saw it again on the 16th.
3-23-11: A lone "jake" (young male) turkey was in front yard scratching for spilled bird seed.
3-25-11: Early morning doe and yearling deer across the lane nibbling in newly exposed grass.
3-30-11: Two pairs of Canada geese on the still frozen pond. Could well be the same two pair from a year go.
3-30 and 31-11: Three or four deer grazing across the lane. "Spitzie" eventually chased them and they went up into the woods, leaving "S" behind.
